Global Warming and the New Breed of Tornadoes

I never thought global warming would affect tornadoes. I mean, some regions are prone to tornadoes and I always unconsciously felt that it came along with the region. So you can imagine my surprise when I learnt that one of the spinoffs of global warming is that such tornadoes, which normally peaks in spring, now come on as early as February as the planet warms. This affects the livelihood of people from all walks of life. Of particular concern are people involved in farming jobs, since weather plays a vital role in their profession.

Along with this climatic shift, the good news is that the frequency of such tornadoes will reduce. Wind shear at higher altitudes is also expected to reduce. The bad news is that their intensity will increase to compensate for the loss. This is because storms which transfer energy from one region to another find ways to do so more efficiently as a means to adapt to the changing climatic conditions.

Along with this, regions that were not earlier associated with thunderstorms will now experience such weather frequently. There will be a shift in the regions usually associated with tornadoes. Atlanta, New York, and regions near the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coast are expected to be new areas where tornadoes are expected to come anew. June to August will see such activity in the eastern half of the US.

All this does not augur well for regions that are historically not used to facing such weather. The standard precautions followed in such places take into account preventive measure, like underground bunkers, when houses are built. The devastation, destruction and death in a region not used to tornadoes and caught unprepared, could be catastrophic. To think that we are all in some way responsible for this shift in climate is something that is hard to digest.

Why become eco friendly?

Saving the planet or taking care of the environment is not really my thing. I honestly don’t care about what happens globally as long as nothing happens to my family, my home and the ones I love. The fact is that I don’t have time for this, as every single minute of my time has been devoted to making money and as per me the world is anyways going to end and at least if I have enough money, then I will have the things that I want to have.

These are the kind of thoughts that I was moving with for a long time, till I saw a display stand in a superstore very close to our home, saying ‘are you paying more than you use’. The thought just stuck in my mind and within no time I started thinking about ways I could reduce the unnecessary usage of resources in both my work and home. This is the first time I realized that being eco friendly can save money and it is not just to save the people who are living in coastal or flood prone areas.

I understand that majority of the energy produced today is produced by burning fossil fuel and burning them is causing global warming. Global warming is causing the ice around the poles to melt and the water from the melted ice is raising the sea levels. But for me who lives in the center of my continent how does it matter. But even then I am working towards making my home eco friendly, simply because it saves money. With the prices of oil and cost of living going high every day it surely makes sense to stop wastage of electricity, water and gas. Eliminating the wastage of these precious resources will not only be indirectly beneficial for the planet, but directly reduce the expenses for my home.

I’m dreaming of a green Christmas

The festive holidays are a pretty wasteful time of year in general; all those crazy displays of electric lights on houses; rolls and rolls on non-recycled wrapping paper under the tree; and don’t get me started on all the food we end up throwing out each year! It seems that people who would normally be the first to pick up every green advice leaflet from display stands during the other 11 months of the year turn into greedy, wasteful consumers at Christmas. But surely there’s a way to celebrate the holidays and be environmentally friendly?

Of course there is, and a lot of the following tips are really just common sense. For example, do not get yourself and your family cast in a Christmas family comedy in which you’re going to end up in competition with your neighbour over who can have the boldest and brashest display of Christmas lights. It won’t end well for either of you and you’ll be stuck with a huge power bill come January…

On a serious note, there really isn’t any need for a flashing six foot Santa Claus on your roof to show the neighbourhood that you have the Christmas spirit. We don’t even have lights on our tree any more, preferring to light candles (well away from the flammable plastic pine needles of course) which look just as good reflected on our decorations. We wrap our presents in recycled paper – and then recycle that; cards are recycled into gift tags for the following year; some of the really nice ones are even turned into tree decorations. If you use your imagination – and put a little bit of effort into the planning – there is no reason that you can’t be as green at Christmas as you are the rest of the year.

Did Steve Jobs care for the environment?

It is one thing to give long lectures on the importance of reducing environmental pollution. However, it is a completely different thing to put the words into practice. It is easy to insist that office cleaners should stop using office cleaners leatherhead because of wastage of resources. However, it is very difficult to criticize a visionary like Steve Jobs for being unenthusiastic about reducing environmental pollution. Lack of enthusiasm on the part of a big corporation can prove disastrous for the environment.

A firm where several thousand individuals are employed can do a lot of damage if it does not pay attention to the environment. On the other hand, use of extra office cleaners letterhead by an employee will not have a significant impact on the degradation of environment. In such a scenario, it becomes important to keep things in perspective and act accordingly. Sadly, this is one thing that is completely absent when it comes to protecting the environment. Each and every individual is expected to contribute equally.
While this sounds great in theory, the truth is that those who are well-off and those who consume more resources will have a greater responsibility of protecting the environment. This issue is so simple and easy-to-understand that it is surprising how people can criticize the same. Corporate organizations often support nongovernmental organizations to speak in favor of environmental protection.

In such a scenario, the nongovernmental organizations find it difficult to even against of those individuals and organizations that have financed them. This is not to imply that such NGOs are corrupt. However, there has been a marked reticence in taking on corporations, especially when they are not doing what is necessary to protect the environment.This will have to change if we expect to improve the environment around us and save the planet.

Global Challenge

When scientist said that the global temperature was rising, there were many that opposed the theory by saying that it’s a regular cycle of the earth and that the increase in the temperature of the earth is a part of the earth’s cycle and it has nothing to do with our fossil fuel burning lifestyle. Thankfully that notion is passing away. Many now believe that there has been an increase in the global temperatures and the ice in the poles are melting giving rise to the sea levels, posing a mega natural destruction and threatening the very existence of our species.

Many people think that global warming is all about the melting ice and the rising sea levels, but is not just about that. It’s also about a global temperature that we are getting into where thousands of harmful bacteria and germs thrive. It’s about getting into a place where thousands if not more number of people can die in an instance due to the outbreak of a deadly sickness or plague.

We need some core techincal solutions to deal with this issue, not just using energy saving bulbs or using shower instead of taking a bath. Yes, little by little we can make a difference, but I believe the time for doing the good things little by little is over, simply because we don’t harm the earth just a little bit, but a whole lot more on a daily basis. People who live far away from the coastline should not think that it’s not going to affect them. It’s going to affect everyone for sure if we don’t make a serious change.

The Australian Gamble

They call it gamble simply because it is a game of win everything or keep losing. This is how Australia needs to address the issues of carbon emissions - the country can either be fined for exceeding carbon emissions allowed and spare huge amounts of its budget to fuel such fines or undertake a more serious approach to environmental protection and ensure a steady improvement of its greenhouse release. A proposed legislation might resolve such issues, and it is on its way of generating the approval necessary for its official release as Australian law.

The current government in Australia, run by Liberals, won the elections just because of its promises to improve the environmental condition of the country by releasing the emissions. Australia emits more than 1.5% of the world greenhouse gases mostly because of its coal energy industry - the country produces electricity mainly through the use of coal since the resource is cheap and easy to find and work through in the country. However, it is now evident that it time is coming to an end and the Australians need a cleaner and a greener future.

The proposed legislation would affect anyone who emits carbon gases - from red diesel supplier businesses to lubricant producers. It would have the most of effect, however, on energy industrialists. The law would impose a significant tax for carbon emissions and the more these increase, the greater the tax would be getting. Thus people in this businesses would have to either modernise their facilities and use more advanced filtering technology or would need to pay extortionate fees to the government.

Specialists expect immediate effect of the legislation upon the behaviour of the Australian industry - a brighter future might be actually coming for one of the greatest polluters of the atmosphere.

Air pollution is common everywhere. When we talk about air pollution we mostly associate it with outdoor pollution. Many times we forget the indoor air pollution, which equally causes health problems. There are many causes for indoor air pollution. Even fine particles from different sources can be the culprit. Indoor air pollutants can either originate from within the house or from outside. Some of the products that affect the air quality of home are tobacco smoke, biological pollutants, radon gas and dust from old book racks. Outdoor air pollution is caused by various sources. Last week I went to a store to buy some HR Software. The store was near a chemical factory which was one of the key factors to the accumulation of smog in that area.

Radon gas is one of the main indoor air pollutants. It is an invisible gas which is colorless and odorless. Radon gas comes from the soil beneath the foundation of your home. It always enters into the houses through the drains and cracked floor and at times through well water. When radon gas gets trapped in homes it causes many serious health problems such as lung cancer. Cigarette smoking is another indoor air pollutant. It causes respiratory tract infections and asthma. It also leads to lung cancer.

There are other indoor air pollutants that are invisible and mostly they travel through air, they are called biological pollutants. Some of them are dust mites, bacteria, viruses, mold, animal dander and mildew. Biological pollutants almost prevail in every home but the amount could vary from house to house. It can cause severe allergies.

Every house has air pollution but we can try to reduce it to live a healthy lifestyle.

Effects of Carbon Monoxide

Being colorless and odorless carbon monoxide cannot be easily detected. The harmful effects of carbon monoxide make it one of the most deadly gases for human beings. In cases of inhaling low quantity of carbon monoxide one may experience nausea, headaches, tiredness and makes it impossible to do any kind of physio jobs. And in case the subject has inhaled larger concentration, it can even cause death.

When carbon monoxide is inhaled, the oxygen in our blood stream is displaced which deprives our heart, brain and important parts of our body from constant blood supply. There are some people who are exposed to a very high concentration of carbon monoxide; there are the people who put themselves in such danger due to their profession. Examples of such profession are fire fighters, welders along with carbon black makers.

However many steps can be taken to reduce the ever increasing levels of carbon monoxide in our atmosphere. One of the most regular producers of carbon monoxide is our diesel and petrol car engines. This is mostly caused due to the improper combustion of gasoline. This can be easily avoided by adding catalytic converters to our car exhausts.

You can keep a check on infra red carbon monoxide by connecting detectors to the ducts of factories or power plants. These detectors will effectively detect the levels of carbon monoxide in the exhaust. This in turn will reveal the efficiency of the combustion. While finding out the presence of carbon monoxide in time is certainly helpful in saving lives, it is also very important to find more advanced and efficient combustion methods.

Tidal turbines for tidal energy conversion

Waves of the ocean are one source of energy on earth that is renewable and abundant. The waves crashing on the shore holds most viewers and visitors to a sea beach in awe and astonishment. The waves increase in force and amplitude with the tide coming in. This tide occurs due to the mixed forces of the sun’s gravitational pull along with that of moon and the earth’s rotation itself. This occurrence of the tides high and low has very predictable frequency and a recurring phenomenon till these natures'elements are present.

As early as the twelfth century, tides and its energy, that is tidal energy, have been used by mankind for its personal use. Tidal mills had then been made to grind grain and corn. With the advent of windmill and waterwheels the tide mills took a back seat and have become near extinct as of now. France was the first to get into this study with the setting up of an electricity generation plant using tidal energy, and maybe now builders London can focus on redeveloping the same.

Barrages, which are dams but of larger dimensions, are constructed at the bottom of the tidal basin. The barrage has gates which allow the tidal basin to get flooded when the tide comes in with a high tide and then the emptying of the basin takes place during the low tide albeit through a turbine. This generates power that can be used by the human race.

There are also tidal fences that are built to generate electricity using tidal energy. Upon the fence there are vertical axis turbines that are mounted and water is forced to pass through these turbines. Tidal fences have been found to be cheaper to construct than tidal barrages.

Wind turbines and tidal turbines are similar by general characteristics. Tidal turbines though are costlier to construct and lay but these types of turbines have more capacity to generate energy. Tidal turbines have an added advantage that they are least damaging to the environment, which is one more important factor in human life as on date.

Bloom Box Energy Server Review

In a world clambering to not only save on the use of energy but also find new energy sources, something new appears. Bloom Energy has finally announced their Bloom Box energy server officially. Bloom Energy shared with the world this new energy server at a press conference.

Big companies like EBay, Coca-Cola and Google use the Bloom Box facilities. The technology used by Bloom Energy severs uses multiple fuels for producing energy. The process is very echo-frie ndly as the emission is quite low. The cells used by Bloom Box energy servers are made from sand so it makes the energy server cost effective in the long run.

Moreover, it can run twenty four hours a day which makes it different than any other energy efficient methods such as wind power or solar power. Solid oxide fuel cells are used by this Bloom Box energy server and the ingredients that generate the power are widely available. Talk about environmentally friendly, this new technology could be the best one yet.

These Bloom box servers are currently too costly at the moment and costs around $700,000. So, only big companies that can afford the cost can use this technology now. Bloom Energy is trying to develop a similar product for using in home.

It will be really interesting to see if Bloom Energy develops this technology and successfully makes a product for the home users. We could then get some custom stickers made that says ‘Bloom Box inside’ and put them on our front doors. Just a thought.
